Gahkuch (Ghizer Times) Due to the increase in temperature in
Pakistan, the risk of flooding has increased due to the melting of glaciers in
Gilgit-Baltistan. In this regard, the Meteorological Department warned the
local authorities on Monday that between May 21 and 27 in GB and Khyber
Pakhtunkhwa. The temperature is expected to be four to six degrees Celsius,
which is above normal.
The Department of Meteorology has warned of possible glacier
leakage burst flood (Gulf) incidents and floods in the region this week.
According to an English newspaper report, storms with wind and thunder are also
expected during this period. Gulp and flash floods are likely to affect
snow-covered and snowy areas of Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral. Local authorities
have warned people living near glaciers to take precautions, including tourists
during rains. Caution is advised.
It should be noted that in 2022, several villages of Hunza,
Nagar, Ghazar, Astor, Skardu and Gilgit districts of Gilgit-Baltistan were
affected by floods and other incidents caused by floods and melting glaciers.
